The Bloomington, Illinois, community is mourning the sudden loss of Captain James Schreiber, a respected firefighter, mentor, and leader whose nearly three decades of service left an enduring mark on the Bloomington Fire Department and the residents he faithfully protected. Schreiber died unexpectedly while off duty at his home on Monday. He was 53.
His passing has deeply affected fellow firefighters, public safety personnel, friends, and community members who knew him as a man defined by integrity, professionalism, and compassion. Fire Chief Cory Matheny described Schreiber as a pillar of the department and a leader whose dedication embodied the highest ideals of public service.
Schreiber began his career with the Bloomington Fire Department on March 10, 1997. Throughout nearly 29 years of service, he earned the trust and respect of colleagues while steadily advancing through the ranks. In 2008, he was promoted to engineer, and in 2019, he achieved the rank of captain, a position that reflected both his experience and his commitment to mentoring younger firefighters.
Chief Matheny said Schreiber consistently showed up for his crew and for the people of Bloomington with courage and heart, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters. His leadership extended beyond emergency responses, influencing the culture of the department through his example and dedication.
A graduate of Normal Community High School’s Class of 1990, Schreiber believed strongly in lifelong learning. He later earned an associate degree in fire science in 2006, further strengthening his expertise and commitment to his profession. Throughout his career, he received several honors recognizing his contributions, including the Life Saving Award, Unit Citation Award, Chief’s Vision Award, and Advanced Education Award.
Colleagues and community members have shared heartfelt tributes recalling his calm presence, leadership, and willingness to support others. Many described him as a firefighter who always put service above self and whose influence reached far beyond the station walls.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Visitation is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with funeral services set for 10 a.m. Saturday.
