The communities of Orland and Prairie Heights are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Febie Booher, whose life was tragically cut short following a two-vehicle collision in Steuben County, Indiana, on June 16. Her sudden passing has left family members, friends, classmates, teammates, and coaches grieving the loss of a young woman remembered for her athletic talent, kindness, and vibrant personality.
According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at the intersection of State Road 327 and County Road 350 North in Jackson Township. Investigators said Booher was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu when it entered the intersection and collided with a northbound Ford F-150 operated by a 36-year-old woman from Orland. Emergency personnel from Orland Fire Rescue and Steuben County EMS responded quickly and attempted life-saving measures, but Booher succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Authorities have indicated that alcohol is not believed to have played a role in the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Beyond the tragedy itself, those who knew Febie are choosing to focus on the remarkable young woman she was and the lasting impression she left on others. A student-athlete at Prairie Heights High School, she excelled on the softball field as both a pitcher and third baseman. As a member of the Fort Wayne Wolfpack travel softball organization, she earned the admiration of coaches and teammates not only for her competitive drive but also for the encouragement and positivity she brought to every game and practice.
Tributes from teammates and members of the softball community have painted a picture of someone who made others feel welcome and valued. Friends remembered her ability to lift spirits, offer support, and create lasting memories both on and off the field. In recognition of the impact she had on the organization, the Fort Wayne Wolfpack announced that her jersey number, 21, will be permanently retired.
Outside athletics, Febie had a passion for photography and enjoyed capturing meaningful moments through her camera lens. Friends and loved ones described her as creative, thoughtful, and deeply compassionate.
As the community continues to mourn, countless messages of sympathy and support have poured in for the Booher family. Though her life ended far too soon, those who loved Febie say her legacy of friendship, kindness, and determination will continue to inspire everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
