South Australian Police confirmed that responders arrived at the scene around 5:15 p.m. local time after reports that a truck had struck a tree.
Authorities stated that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 57-year-old man from Waitpinga, sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital for urgent treatment. While police have not officially confirmed the identity of the individual, multiple reports indicate that the injured man is former AFL star Tony Modra.
Preliminary information suggests the accident occurred while the vehicle was being operated on a rural property, resulting in a collision with a tree. The impact caused significant damage and left the driver seriously injured. Tony Modra is widely regarded as one of the most electrifying forwards in Australian Football League history. Known for his spectacular aerial marking and goal-scoring ability, he became a fan favorite during his time with the Adelaide Football Club and later the Fremantle Football Club.
His standout 1993 season, in which he kicked 129 goals, remains one of the most remarkable individual performances in modern AFL history. Despite a serious knee injury that ruled him out of Adelaide’s 1997 premiership campaign, Modra’s impact on the game has endured, earning him lasting respect and admiration from fans across Australia.
After retiring from professional football in 2001, Modra settled in Waitpinga, South Australia, where he has lived and worked on a cattle property for more than two decades.
News of the accident has prompted an outpouring of support from former teammates, clubs, fans, and the wider AFL community, with many sending messages wishing him strength and a full recovery as he continues to receive medical care.
