It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we remember and honor the life of Coach Matt Childs, a cherished member of the Parkside Rams Football family, a dedicated mentor, a devoted husband and father, and a man whose influence reached far beyond the football field.
His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, fellow coaches, players, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. While words can never fully capture the depth of this loss, they serve as a reflection of a life defined by commitment, leadership, service, and love.
For more than five years, Coach Childs was a cornerstone of the Parkside Rams Football program. His dedication to the team never wavered, and his commitment to the development of young athletes was evident in everything he did. Long before practices began and long after the final whistle, he was often present—working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the program and its players had every opportunity to succeed.
Much of his work was done quietly, without expectation of recognition. He was not driven by praise, but by purpose. His focus remained on supporting his players, strengthening the program, and helping young men grow into responsible, disciplined, and confident individuals both on and off the field.
Coach Childs understood that football was about far more than wins and losses. To him, it was a platform for teaching discipline, accountability, perseverance, teamwork, and character. Every practice, conversation, and challenge carried meaning. He believed the lessons learned through sports could shape lives long after the game ended, and he lived that belief every day.
His players respected him not only for his knowledge of the game, but for the genuine care he showed them as individuals. He celebrated their successes, guided them through setbacks, and consistently pushed them to reach their full potential. Many of the lessons he imparted will remain with them long after their time on the field.
As a mentor, Coach Childs had a rare ability to connect with young people. He led with patience, humility, and example, earning trust through consistency and sincerity. His influence extended throughout both the Parkside Rams and Wihi football programs, where countless athletes benefited from his leadership and encouragement.
Colleagues remember him as a model of professionalism and dedication. He was known for his tireless work ethic, often arriving early, staying late, and doing whatever was necessary to support the team. He embodied the qualities every program hopes to have in a coach and every community values in a leader.
Beyond football, Coach Childs’ greatest pride was his family.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Kelly, and a loving father whose family was the center of his world. His commitment to his children was evident in everything he did. The same values he taught on the field—integrity, hard work, compassion, and respect—were the ones he lived at home each day.
His sons, Zack, Ian, and Garrett Childs, carry forward the example he set through his life. In him, they saw what it means to lead with humility, to serve others selflessly, and to remain devoted to family and community. While his absence leaves an unimaginable pain, his legacy endures in the lives he shaped and the values he instilled.
Coach Matt Childs leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in records or seasons, but in the lives he impacted, the young men he guided, and the community he strengthened through his presence, leadership, and love.
