GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — Authorities are investigating two separate serious crashes on major West Michigan highways, including a fatal collision on Interstate 96 near the Grand Rapids area and a wrong-way crash on Interstate 196 in Allegan County that also resulted in a death.
According to law enforcement reports, the crash on I-96 involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck. Investigators say the passenger vehicle reportedly made contact with the truck before the driver lost control, leading to a severe secondary impact. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident was reported and provided aid at the scene.
Officials confirmed that at least one person died in the crash. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of family members. The exact sequence of events leading up to the collision remains under active investigation.
In a separate incident on Interstate 196 near the Saugatuck area, authorities responded to a wrong-way crash involving multiple semi-trucks. Investigators said a vehicle entered the highway traveling against traffic and collided with oncoming trucks, triggering a major emergency response and extended roadway closures.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional injuries were reported. Preliminary information suggests that impairment may have been a contributing factor, though officials have not yet confirmed the circumstances pending toxicology results and further investigation.
Both incidents caused significant disruption across key West Michigan travel routes, with portions of the highways closed for several hours while crews worked to clear debris and investigators documented the crash scenes.
Authorities say both cases remain under active investigation, and further details will be released as they are confirmed.
